According to its sales rankings, my book hasn't sold a paperback copy on Amazon in a while. And yet, in the last week it's gone from "only 15 left in stock" down to "only 8 left in stock" and now back up to 10.

Can anyone throw any light on possible reasons for this puzzling behaviour?

Which magazine is currently investigating online travel sites such as Bookingsdotcom and Expedia, and the others, that tell you there are "only 5 rooms left" or that "last room booked 2 hours ago." They want them to be much more open, and to disclose where and how this information is gathered. There is a suggestion that it is a marketing ploy, and since they won't disclose how they compile such information it is impossible to prove or disprove that suggestion. Far from me to suggest that Amazon would be guilty of that kind of behaviour to sell books. Could it not be people putting books into "shopping lists" and then talking them out again, or just deleting the entire list? It does seem to be a lot, considering none were sold, but it is starting to run up to Christmas and people might be creating "wishlists". Less likely, but could the books be given away? As an Amazon staff benefit of some kind? Otherwise, they just have very bad stock keeping, and five of your books were stolen?

All possibilities, I guess. And thinking about it, the system might register a sale only when the book is dispatched, but the stock might be adjusted when the order is placed. If that's the case, I suppose the sales should show up in the next couple of days. But I'm sure something like this has happened before with no corresponding sales.

I assume you mean UK, as my Amazon said it would be in stock on November 4th a day or so ago. But if it helps, I bought it twice recently and one was lost and the other got returned because the recipient was unable to pick it up in time.

Could it be amazon shifting stock amongst different geographical centres? I notice that the US site only has 1 available, whereas the UK site has 11? But that wouldn't make sense if you have a dedicated US edition. However perhaps they are shipping some off to the continent and other places?

Could it also be independent sellers who are selling on Amazon as well as other stores at the same time; so stock goes up and down even though the Amazon store itself hasn't made any trades.
