book search ocean life sentient working together to save itself

1. seeking to recall a book read approx 2002. Humans living and working in the ocean are attacked by what they think is a monster. in the end, the ocean is found to be sentient or the sea life is sentient and the ocean life mind melds in some way and works to defeat humans who are seen as an enemy to ocean life and the earth. It was a very thick paperback with a green and blue cover illustration. Any help welcome.

Hi,

Two thoughts spring to mind. First Pisces Rising, by Peter Cave (1979) - where all the sea creatures of the world come together under the banner of their god to battle humankind.

The second is of course Solaris by Lem (1961) which is a sentient alien ocean.

Thank you for writing. unfortunately it is not Solaris. any other ideas? It was on earth, and it was a working together to solve a problem (the problem being humans) of the ocean life.

Just barely possible it could be Orson Scott Card's 'The Abyss', but unlikely, as that one was mostly about the humans.

This smells like a serial which was in Asimov's Mag; probably just before it was released as a paperback novel. Timing seems about right.
