So I've been searching for this book I read sometime between 2006 and 2008. The details I remember are sparse as I read it when I was a child, but the setting was a literally layered world where the people's lives got progressively worse the lower the layer they were in. The protagonist was an illiterate male whose illiteracy was a plot point late in the book because it allowed someone to trick him as to the contents of... something written. That's pretty much all I remember as to plot and characters.
The book is either children's or YA and probably a couple hundred pages long. The book was written in English. I read the book in Texas (don't know why that would help, but threw it in)
All suggestions for what the book may be are appreciated, even if they don't match one or two of the details (it's possible I've gotten one or two wrong anyway, my memory's not that great). Thank you.
