I can't be bothered with James Bond. Every new film that comes out gets more and more ridiculous. It's more fantasy than spy thriller. I like fantasy but I don't like something pretending to be something it's not.

I like salt with my porridge, dragons with my fantasy and spies that are supposed to be in the real world actually working in a real-life environment and not possessing almost superhuman skills just so they can escape the latest dangerous scenario.

For a while, I used to think that maybe I just didn't like spy thrillers. Then along came The Bureau. This French series focusses on procedure and intrigue. Watch a whole season and there's actually very little action, no car chases to speak of and definitely no ridiculous stunts involving planes with no wings chasing cars through the snow (yes I tried to watch a bit of Spectre the other night but could only manage half an hour or so of that nonsense).

In The Bureau, it's all about the characters and their dilemmas. But what makes it really stand out is that it is so believable and that gives it something that James Bond lacks...an edge so chilling because it comes across as an event with a distinct possibility of existence in our troubled world.

I'm hooked and can't wait for season 3 to come out on DVD:)
