Pioneer taming hostile planet

A book I read in the mid 1960's about a person (people?) recruited to travel to a new planet capable of sustaining human life but hostile to it. Recruits were trained and equipped to survive in this hostile environment, a part of the survival tools were weapons (two guns?) which were surgically attached and controlled by the users mind.

Book was a hardcover novel (donated to school library)..

Sounds a bit like Deathworld by Harry Harrison, though the guns don't quite fit.
