Hi! Looking for a book title

Year published: Sometime between 1998 and 2008
Story Synopsis: The protagonist is sent to a castle (takes place in a medieval type setting) that is under attack (part of an ongoing war) to be the new leader because all the previous leaders have been murdered mysteriously. He is sent because he cant stay dead despite being murdered several times throughout the story. This is a fantasy novel because I distinctly remember some of the characters being creatures such as ogres goblins, griffins, etc and there was magic involved. At the start of the story the main character was something of a coward but he progressively became more brave. Definitely remember apart where the protagonist rides a griffin or something. There was a lot of dark humor throughout the story.
Author: Unknown and I think I remember him not being well known at the time this book was published so it may have been one of his first works. I got it from a local library.
