The Price of Protection

Sorel shot his last arrow.

The man’s blood tumbled to the ground like pink flowers on the driven snow. Sorel took a shaky breath; seven ambushers dead.

His newborn stirred inside the house. He retreated, only to find a black, burning symbol etched into his door.

“No,” he whispered. “I was only protecting…”

But what is done cannot be undone. She was already on her way.

The Goddess of Death, forever fearful of being usurped.

STANDING ON MY OWN TWO FEET

It’s easy, being a god. Turn up, lay down the rules, leave. Ensure presence after natural disasters. Recent examples include rain when needed and a soft wind after wildfires.

Belief. Assured.

But a Goddess...? Magic a miracle and they’ll credit ol’ Ma Nature. The tide rises and Poseidon gets the goods.

But I have a plan. A moving mountain complete with goats and its own song.

Altogether now...

SISTERS ARE DOING IT FOR THEMSELVES...

Ammit Abides

Imut, washes his hands in the Nile under the nodding palms of Thebes. Hoopoes dance around his feet, crests flared like headdresses.
‘There’s no worm here!’
Just curlicues of his wife’s blood, drifting from his hands to the sea.
‘Oo-o, oo-o,’ the birds say.

Later, in the chapel of the dead he leaves grain and lapis-stained papyrus.
But I don’t hunger for grain; my worm is the bitter, seasoned soul.
Oo-o, oo-o, Imut, oo-o…

Irritable Planetary Syndrome
The Doctor to the Gods watched as Eternal Father, the big baby, writhed and screamed like he was a mortal giving birth.

“Help… me… I’m dying...” The Creator howled, creating a disturbance right across all known existence.

“You have irritable planetary syndrome. I have prescribed a healthy celestial diet and exercise. You shall be as right as rain as long as you do not eat any more of your creations.”

Fear

Grey was the void as she appeared. Wind began to blow, her eyes burning green. I gasped as Eris reached a blackened hand. "Fear. You are fear."
****
"Keera!" I jumped into a defensive stance and screamed. My hands curled, hair flying as wind flew around me. People collapsed as I shrieked, violent scenes dancing around my vision. Electricity cracked through the room from my hands.

"You are fear," Eris had imparted. She was correct.
