Breaking the fourth wall

I wonder if you can break the 4th wall from a characters perspective while still maintaining the readers 4th wall...

my head hurts thinking about it

I think I've seen it done in a video game, where the massive plot twist half way through was that they were characters in a video game. They then went outside the game to negotiate not being deleted by their coders. The player's wall was maintained though, because from our perspective both characters and coders were still in the game - is that the kind of thing you meant?

I'm currently reading Belgarath the Sorcerer by David Eddings, and that sort of breaks the fourth wall because the whole thing is essentially a history text being written by a character who lived through it all, and it's constantly interrupted by little asides towards the characters who might read it one day.

I Googled it to check the title and apparently it's out for PS4. I actually found that twist rather disappointing and gave up the game not long after. (To be fair, I was already finding it quite frustrating in true JRPG random-battle fashion.) I have good memories of the earlier parts, though.

I have no PS4, so that doesn't really help.

I remember at the time it was a pretty divisive twist. I wouldn't quite say it tore the Internet in two, but that's only because it wasn't a more widely known game. If one of the Final Fantasy's tried it, it'd probably still be argued about to this day :D

I found the battles pretty easy once I figured out Side Kick > pretty much everything the enemies can throw at you.
