Does anyone now read books by this once-famous author (1789-1851) of The Last of the Mohicans, The Deerslayer, The Pioneers, The Pilot, The Pathfinder, etc.? Is he to be remembered now only for Mark Twain's piece on his literary offenses?

One must give him this at least, that some of his books were the occasion of some appealing artwork by N. C. Wyeth.

I read the Last of the Mohicans many years ago, and really enjoyed it. More recently I read a biography of Daniel Boone, around whom I believe the story may have been based.

However, on a more mundane level..... a few years ago, I revisited Classics Illustrated and to my great pleasure picked up copies of all the James Fenimore Cooper comic editions. The Pathfinder had been a real childhood favourite of mine, but I had not read the others. I had not realised just how much he had written.

The Last of the Mohicans, The Deerslayer, and The Pathfinder, were all read when I was a youngster (12?) and was enthralled then. I'm not sure how they'd stand up to my more mature (hopefully) and more urban (sadly) sensibilities.

I was just out of High School when I read Mohicans. I just couldn't get into it. I've always meant to read Deerslayer, but haven't yet.
