Book question

I read a book years ago that was part of a series. It was a paperback from the library. The main character was an admiral (I think) that was in a future where two rival factions of humans were are war. There where a race of creatures called "Bears" that were allies to the main character, and they flew spaceships called "Star furies" which were tri hulled. He had a daughter that was adopted by the emperor. I would love to read more of the series, I seem to remember enjoying the one book I read. Thanks for any help!

Though it was a show not a book and the plot is way off, star furies were the personal combat ships used in Babylon Five. Maybe there's a link there somewhere.

No sure about starfury but characters described like bears are in Joe Haldeman's Forever war.
