A poor insect-like creature is somehow captured on its own planet by human space travelers. They take it aboard the spaceship to study it; the humans do not know that it is intelligent. The alien can repeat what it hears, e,g, "pass the sugar", but the crew thinks this is just parroting and not intelligence. It is able to escape at night and it communicates messages to its fellow aliens somehow. It directs that they turn up the heat of the atmosphere (somehow they can do this) so as to force the humans to leave. In its last message the captive alien states that it will die w/ the humans or leave with them. Heard of this? It was from a library book; anthology most likely. Altdude
