The story included the rescue of a disabled spaceship that had an astronaut in suspended animation from the cold of space. He is resuscitated and his rescuers planned to have him steal something ( can’t remember what) because he was old enough not to have the anti radiation “vaccination “ based on lead when he originally left earth. The sensors that protect the thing to be stolen won’t be able to detect him without this. Enjoyed the book and was thinking about it lately.

The Star Of Life by Edmond Hamilton begins with "an astronaut in suspended animation from the cold of space." Not sure about the rest of the story as you describe it.

Suspended animation from the cold of space... sounds like the opening credits from the '80s Buck Rogers TV show. His life support system froze him...

--Paul E Musselman

It also sounds like the beginning of Red Dwarf, A story that likewise bears no resemblance to the original question.
