(Found) Obscure Sci/fi paper back i read in the late80s early90s

Can vaguley remember the main character was a bit of a loser type with his own spacecraft. And one of the characters had transparent skin that took some getting used too, i would love to read it again as i read it as a teenager. Thanks for your help.
