Can someone help me find this old sci-fi novel about an alien that really hates teeth?

The book starts with a human-like alien falling to earth and getting hit by a car. Possibly a race car during a live race, though I'm not sure of that detail. They (he I think?) are taken to a hospital for treatment. From the alien's perspective, he describes being disgusted by the "vulgar showing of teeth" and especially of being expected to eat in front of other people. He's caught hiding in the closet to eat nutrition pills that he had from before his fall, and it's implied that in his culture eating was an especially vulgar activity. I distinctly remember him referring to the "fired bread" (toast) that they brought him for meals, and I had a vague feeling the book was set in England somewhere.
There's also mentions of some kind of "wheel" that appeared to have religious connotations, but I didn't get very far into the book and don't remember much more about it.
A little context: When I was 10 or 11 years old (Late 1990s), I picked up this sci-fi book from the library that was way above my reading level (definitely teen maybe adult). I couldn't finish reading it before it was due, so my mom returned it thinking I could pick it up again next week. By the time I went, I couldn't remember the name or author, and the library had changed their database and couldn't tell me what books I recently checked out. I spent years in the sci-fi section trying to find it. Found a lot of great books, but this one still eludes me. It's been over 15 years, so I'm hoping someone recognizes this from my hazy childhood memory.

One of Heinlein's juveniles involved a space cadet on a ?training? flight to Venus. He crashlands. He is rescued by the Venutians, and somewhere along the line one of the cadets has experience on Venus, and the Venutians consider eating disgusting, and hide in closets to eat...

Title is Space Cadet.

This is the reverse of Yar's story-- the Venutians don't leave Venus, and are not hit by a car.
