Book read in 1994 that I’m pretty sure is NOT part of the Hyperion Cantos

You’ll forgive me, however, if I mix in bits from Hyperion: I read Hyperion and the mystery book (as well as stacks and stacks of other less memorable books) in the summer of 1994, in Abilene, TX, when I was 17 and pregnant with my first child.

What I remember: A man and a woman, who may or may not be lovers, and the woman's young son, who seems to be somewhat mentally disabled. They are traveling together for some reason - maybe seeking something to help the boy - and arrive on a planet where they can only travel by day. Each night they stay indoors, and the buildings all have shutters to keep the monsters at bay. The monsters are white, with red eyes, sharp teeth, and long fingers that try to pry open the shutters. They might be in the mountains, traveling to a lake or ocean. When they reach the coast of the lake or ocean, the boy falls from a high place and hits the sand, and shatters into dozens of shards that are tiny copies of the boy and that run every which way.

That’s what I remember that I’m pretty sure is not Hyperion. Other details I remember, but these might not relate to the mystery story at all (and are probably bleedover memories of Hyperion - I’ve read the Hyperion Cantos as an adult, and I’m pretty sure these next bits are Hyperion - but I’m including them anyway because you never know):

Possible treeship that is psychically linked to other treeships, and that can psychically communicate with passengers if it so desires.

Planetary alliance called the archipelago

Space travel period, because tbh it might be a fantasy rather than sci-fi.

Time debt

Other factors that might impact what I remember:

This was 24 years ago for God’s sake

Teenage hormones

Pregnant hormones

Pregnant teenage hormones

Angst

Family drama

Did I dream it and then later think it was a book?

Any thoughts or suggestions are most appreciated.

My guess is you are looking for Shadow's End by Sheri S Tepper.

The autistic boy (Leely) in that book had exactly that happen to him, I think he became 110 little versions of himself.

Before that the 'night creatures' regularly floated down seeking prey.

The book was published in 1994

You're welcome - the memories you had about a 'treeship' were, as you surmised, indeed mixed in from the Hyperion Cantos. :)
