I read this book in the 70s or 80s. It’s written from the view point of an earth warship captain who lands on a planet with a human colony that has stopped reporting. He discovers all of the colonists gone except for a few sealed up in a cave that had been transformed by some type of alien bioengineering to be workers on a high gravity planet ( probably miners ) with the women being transformed into breeders of this bioengineered race.
I believe that this unknown race was referred to as “ the others”. They or their ships had never been seen by any human warship.
