robots in a futuristic

I'm looking for a series of books that I remember seeing in the early 1990s. There were several books in the series by the time I saw them. At least 20 books were written, if not more. It was about man powered robots of some kind and a battle for earth/mars/the universe at large I believe. I cannot remember the author or titles. I know they were published in paperback by TOR I think. My son really likes science fiction but hates to read. I was hoping he might like these books. I know several "boys" I knew at the time really loved these books. Unfortunately I have lost contact with them over the years...

I read a couple of Battletech books around that time which focused on giant robots with human pilots and there were far more than 20 of them:

It could also be the Robotech novelizations by Jack McKinney.
