I cant remember the name of this series, but it was a pretty long series if I remember right. I'll list the plot points that i remember.
The main character was male, and he kept adding brain implants. More then anyone else was able to.
The whole crew plays a communal word game involving connecting to each other over the implants to gain proficiency in using the implants
Early in the series they free a bunch of Ai's imprisoned on a planet, one of who becomes the main characters best friend through out the series.
Ships travel via some kind of jump point. I remember systems are connected in paths
They create their own government and occupy some planets in a through system no one else wants
The AI's create and control a banking system they all use.
Towards the end if the series, there is an invasion from the "bottom" of the system chain and all the world's start retreating towards to top, where they go through a jump point and close it behind them. This starts a spin off series.
If anyone knows his series , I would appreciate it. I want to read it again
