Hugo Winners Announced

You beat me to it.

I can only comment fully on the short story and novelette categories, although I will note in passing that, once again, women have taken all the fiction awards. I would have gone with "The Martian Obelisk" for short story and "A Series of Steaks" for novelette. Interesting to note that the fiction winners are the same as the Nebula winners, with the exception of novelette.

I think the women taking all the fiction categories is indicative that people are looking for new points of view in science fiction. And isn't that what sci fi is all about?

I was not aware that NK Jemisin was either a woman or one of colour until an article about the Hugos in the Guardian pointed this out. I have to say it makes absolutely no difference to me. I read the whole trilogy a few months ago ( Christmas present) and thought it was very good, though I was somewhat fatigued by the end of the third book.

Indeed. Quite remarkable.

I believe, in fact, that she is the only person to win three fiction Hugo awards, for any length story, in a row.

(Lots of artists, fan writers, and so on have won multiple Hugos in a row.)

I guess now I am going to have to read them. I started the first one. It is fantasy not science fiction and I am not really a fantasy fan.
This was my thought. I’d seen them and had wondered about reading them anyway. Like hitmouse I had no idea the author was female either, but it’s of no moment is it. Congrats to the winners - I’m not familiar with any of the authors but there are obviously many strong female SF writers working at the moment.

Or they just happened to write the best work this particular year - I hope it’s that anyway.

I read one reviewer describe it as "misery porn". I got 1/3rd of the way through the first book. It was kind of fascinating in making me wonder what the three different threads were all about but none of them were any fun so I put it aside. But I have to wonder what is going on with the first Trilogy Hugo that I know of.

I have read all of the Vorkosigan series so I tried two of Bujold's fantasy novels and they just don't interest me. This is different in being very geophysical. LOL
