a hunter is transported to another planet and finds a statue lying on its back

I read this book around 1967. As I remember, it starts out with a man hunting in the forest and is attacked by a bear and runs through the forest to a clearing. But something is wrong and he sees an object and goes towards it. He discovers that the object is a statue lying on it's back gazing at the stars. He finds an opening into the statue and enters He notices other people are arriving also and they all go to different parts of the statue. He realizes that he is that statue's mind and al these people are brought here to bring life back to this statue and save some world.

No idea, but it sounds like a interesting story.
