Please help name this sci-fi story
Details mostly sure but some maybe mixed up:
Short story possibly in hardback book of collected short stories collated/edited by Ben Bova in mid 1970's.
Young man explores his world including venturing up into a (possibly forbidden) area with less gravity the farther he goes. He finds something I remember as a control room and maybe a bridge. When he sits in the chair in the control room he is informed (not sure if voice or screen) that three rooms/chairs must be occupied for any action/response

So a Generational ship, this sounds so familiar unless I've read something very similar can't for the life of me remember which I'll have to Google and see if I can remember but by the hat time I can guarantee someone will answer before me again

I was thinking along the lines of a Heinleins Orphans of the Sky

That's the one I read but vaguely remember the plot

Maybe it is OOTS, I've only noticed, when i looked at the question again, the bit about gravity

Pretty sure it's Orphans of the Sky. I just did a quick scan of my copy and the Control Room was in low gravity.
