Main Character on his first mission off planet earth, to a planet where all species of life are carnivorous and highly aggressive. Main Character is Highly trained notably his senses and reflexes. Must be able to dispatch with sidearm any sudden attack by plant or animal.
I read this book at some time in, Mid 60's to Mid 70's

A similar planet shows up in Alan Dean Foster's MIDWORLD stories. And his hero, Flinx, shows up in MID-FLINX. Similarly nasty species of life.

In neither Deathworld nor Midworld is the main character on their first trip off Earth, but I think that must be misremembered and it sounds closer to the Harrison to me - agree, must be Deathword.
