I don't recall the title, or the author. I read this book in the early 70's, but it may have been written in the 50's or 60's. It has a Harry Harrison feel about it.

The main character is an agent of some kind, and the agency has access to portals, through which one can travel to other dimensions/alternate worlds. In one of the worlds, there are a people who are not quite human, slightly ape-like. These people are intending on invading our world. The hero does a lot of portal traveling in an attempt to thwart there attempts. At the end of the story, he lures the invading force through a portal, and then strands them there. In the final analysis, it is determined that he stranded them 50 thousand years (not sure of the time) in our past, and that they turned out to be neanderthals.

Any help on identifying the title and the author would be appreciated.

Thanks.
Roy.

It sounds bit like Andre Norton's novel The Crossroads of Time.

Maybe The Corridors of Time by Poul Anderson (1966)?

Hi,

I'm thinking it might be one of the Paratime books by H Beam Piper.

Cheers, Greg.
Hello Greg

Maybe you're thinking of Paratime 'Genesis' by H Beam Piper?
It's not quite the same as in the querent's memories.

In that story advanced people arrive from Mars in a one off colony ship but find themselves surrounded by brutal 'Hairy People' (Neanderthals)

Slowly over generations the Martians come to dominate the brutes and they eventually prevail as the superior lifeform - Homo Superior.

The story is available free in Project Gutenberg

Hi,

Maybe. But there were a lot of paratime books and novellas by piper, and then more after he finished with it. Most of them were the twentieth century man arrives in primitive land and brings technology trope - a la Lord Kelvin, but I remember that some involved Neanderthals.

The only other thought I have is the "Sliders" tv series, which is even closer to the OP - but I don't know if it was based on any particular books - or if any came from it.

Cheers, Greg.

Thanks for all the responses.

"Crossroads of Time" sounds a little like the story I read, although not quite. And the story I read definitely didn't seem like an Andre Norton book.

Poul Anderson is more promising, but "The Corridors of Time" doesn't sound like it either.

The Paratime books by H Beam Piper sound promising, too. I will have to check those out.

But just to clarify, Neanderthals were not mentioned in the book, until the very end, when it became clear that the invaders that were trapped in the past were who we now call Neanderthals.

Thanks, everyone. I feel that I will be getting to the bottom of this soon.

...sounds a lot like;
The other Side of Time by Keith Laumer. Copy right 1965, my copy does not have Isbn numbers.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/0451052552/?tag=id2100-20
Its an alternate universe/time line book (one of several with the same main character.
The hero is an agent (kidnapped from our timeline in another book).
The bad guys are called the Hagroon and indeed are shifted 50,000 years...

I give this one 4 stars; but then I like Laumer's books.

Enjoy!
