Post Apocalyptic, North America, Clans, Senses of Wolf then Cat, Pulp Paperback

Multi book series, set in North America. Population in small groups, young man first gains senses of wolf and then later (a few books later) of a cat. Fighting for survival against, umm, aliens I think. Mass market paperback, USA published - definitely pulp, not high art. "Enjoyable romp" as they say.

Any ideas?

I cant remember wolfs or cats in the A.W mutants I can remember

No aliens in the Amtrak Wars, no senses of Wolf or Cats. AW takes place above ground and in the remnants of the USA.

Doesn't sound like Amtrak Wars to me.
