Searching for a Sci-fi book about the soviets invading the US

I read this book late 80's early 90's it was about the Russians invading the US, and nuking several cities the US Army sent 3 convoys of ARMY Mech Troops to DC to save the President. the books follows 1 of the groups of robot/Human soldiers. I do remember the soldiers shooting ball bearings our of their arms kind of like Iron man would the book ends when only 1 of the groups make DC, and the Russians are there with their own Mech soldiers
