Interesting read. It sounds quite a bit like what Nietzsche suggested with the Übermensch idea, although Nietzsche was all in favor of the idea, and it would seem that Hawkins was against it.
All of it begs an interesting question. Is it preferable (or perhaps more moral) for humanity to evolve, knowing that this will lead to the obsolescence and certainty of untold suffering of billions, or to genetically stagnate and run the risk of being overtaken by something else and completely wiped out. Sounds like a good theme for a SF novel...
