I am looking for a short story, probably from the 1970s or early '80s. I don't remember much about it except that the main character is in a post apocalyptic world inhabited by humans who have become dangerous wildmen/women who he recognizes from his normal, mundane, suburban world. I seem to recall a scene in which the main character encounters these people while on an abandoned highway with embankments on either side, with these threatening people up on the embankments.
