Space pod lands on earth SF story

the story is about a pod that lands in america and has a metal spider exploring the area.
(metal spider probe is a distraction -as the pod grows)
astronaut enters the pod and disappears inside a vast space of stars
Similar pod is seen in Russia

Great story but cannot remember the author or name
