Science fiction novel I read in the 70’s about Earth spreading out to the stars. Two alien leaders, I think they were referred to as overlords, were concerned about the terrans and make a bet that they could not survive on a hostile world. They tricked a terran into returning home and redirected his ship to a hostile world. In doing so, two stowaways, a mother and son, where caught in the trap.
After landing in the hostile world, he survives and takes care of the mother and son. The leader that bet against him surviving arrives with soldier to kill him, one being a former inhabitant of this hostile world. The soldier is ordered to kill him but refuses to do so after seeing how he managed to not only survive but prosper on the world.
