lost story - sea of mountains children's novel

I read this when I was young, so its either Young Adult or children's fiction.
two main characters, a boy and a girl, go on a journey, at one point they try to cross a 'sea' of moving mountains. they also spend time in a horrible city that is full of machines and is very hot?
help!

Haven't a clue, but it would help to know when you were very young. Do you know if the book was new at that time? Do you remember the cover at all? Do you remember if it was a novel or a short story? Are there any other plot devices or locations that you remember? Any names of characters? Any additional information ramps the likelihood of someone knowing the book.
