Based on the book series also known collectively as "the Expanse" (which I must admit I've not read), written by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (under the pen name James S. A. Corey). This looks good. I for one am happy to see TV returing to space-set shows.

PS Mike from Breaking Bad!!

Love the books.

And I live in hope for a genre tv series I actually watch.

I've just started reading the first one, Leviathan Wakes, with it having been on my TBR for a few months - the book is great fun, and the universe just feels just right for the screen.

The trailer also looks surprisingly good, so I'm tentatively looking forward to this!

We could definitely use a good space saga.(y)

Been watching footage of this, and The Expanse is shaping up to be the sci-fi show to watch out for. Especially since Dark Matter and Killjoys ended up being just okay. While Dark Matter and Killjoys are all about the action of the story, The Expanse seems to be more about the community and how it grows in a new world. The more I watch the trailer, the more I get BSG vibes from it. I think their concept is very ambitious.

The good thing about this production is it's based on already written book series and the authors are executive producers on the show. So that alone has potential enough for them to do justice for the show.

1st episode has been released online via a number of sites, most are US only but managed to find one on YouTube. Looks good although not the fastest start and I really didn't envisage miller being so, well, young...

This is a good show but its not great, something rubs me the wrong way about it. A friend of mine knows the books series but I don't so I can't give you any history on it. However there is something wrong, maybe its the looks yet I like the sets and ships look very nice but maybe Mars should be more of a real space colony, I don't know maybe the look is wrong and it should look a bit more 'red' or something. I think the series might have been mis-cast, don't get me wrong I think there are really good actors in this show. Wes Chatham is strong, Cas Anvar ex-Mars soldier is good, Chad Coleman as the Col is good and the guy playing the Cop with detective hat, a kind of space KojakColumbo is easily the strongest actor on the show, Athena Karkanis is also good but the rest of the cast I can not warm to....I scifi characters like Spock from Star Trek and River Tam from Firefly or Frankenstiens Monster but its the writing I don't really see much in these Expanse characters. there is already so much fantasy, scifi, comicbook stuff out there what will make this series different or make it stand out? Part of me feels like giving up already and another part says I'll stay with it for a while and see how it goes...so far 7 out of 10

i feel like syfy in general has been kind of a disappointment lately...so havent even bothered watching. unless i should?

Others will disagree with me, Serge, but the jury, for me, is still out on The Expanse. It's better than most though so you could check out Ep 1 and see what you think. Hey, it's only 40 minutes of your life, right? Like everyone else I'm still waiting for the next BSG. Sigh. Sadly I think such days might be behind us.

To me BSG had the best most mind blowing ending of any show I've ever seen! So I can't judge until the expanse has ended, for awhile too!

I think I might start this series today. I'm a fairly big fan of the books.

Question: Is this show candy or cocaine? I ask, because I am planning to put it on while I work, and I want only a mild distraction.

I'm up to date on episodes and actually enjoying this. So far I've resisted the urge to read Leviathan Wakes. The series itself is sufficiently entertaining. Good characters for the most part and good effects. Only two minor quibbles: I have had to turn on the subtitles to understand some of the dialogue. And the concept for the story seems to be lifted from Charles Sheffield's Cold As Ice series. But I'm in for the long haul.

I agree, even though the book 1 is good, I cannot turn my writer/editor head off. There are sections which I would like to smooth a bit. LOL

What they don't explain in the series is the Belt language. In the book they mention that it's one of those mixed languages, not just advanced english/german/whatever.

I watched the first two episodes last night. I like it. It's been a few years since I read the first book, so most of the material is fresh but familiar. Holden is not how I imagined, but I love their choice or Naomi, so it balances out.

The release schedule was interesting for this series. The 1st. Episode was quietly out there on demand for 2 weeks before the official release date. One the day after the first Episode aired the first 4 shows were available on demand. This remained until the 5th episode where it went to the traditional week to week release.
It's a good strategy for people to get a 4 show taste and build a sense of anticipation quickly in these short attention span times that we live in.

It was also good to hear that it has been green lighted for a second season already.

I thought it's running on SyFy channel, if you're a sky tv subscriber.
Only US and CAN release so far, nothing in the UK and no date for it. Its no wonder it isn't getting the attention it deserves. And web watching from syfy.com only works if you are in the resident country (and can provide cable subscriber details). Luckily space.ca does not so a simple Canadian VPN and you're able to watch online. Not gonna get mass audience like that though, and this show deserves it!

Right. Well, to be honest, BSG was the same. They distributed it in great many countries, but through the traditional model, and not following TWD/GoT mass launches. It still works, even if it's really annoying that rest of the world has to wait.

Ok, I'm three episodes in and enjoying it very much. Shy seem to be really upping their game.
