The Expanse - 3.08: It Reaches Out

3.08 It Reaches Out
I had a feeling that Miller was going to be the Human-Protomolecule go-between.
I don't know if Holden can handle his impromptu role as interpreter of Miller's anecdotal riddles, although he did get Miller's message that a high-speed ring entry is a big no-no.
I was surprised to learn that Drummer has a first name.

I don't know how to really think about Miller and his projection appearing tens of thousands kilometres from the Ring. Why would a biomechanical machine store human avatar, including the hat, and use it to contact the only person in human civilisation who is hell bent on getting the blue s*** evaporated?

I don't understand the blue zone. And I don't understand long distance telepathy, that's why I haven't commented. This thing seems to throw me off the track as much as it did in the books. Nevertheless, I still loved seeing the detective and his hat.

How did Rosinante get into a situation where it's all out of ammo? Is her crew sailing with their reputation alone in the danger zone? When Holden is going to space that drone pilot?

They are really going places with this season ;)

My understanding is that the PM has assimilated all of the humans it has infected, right down to their neural structure, so essentially it's almost as if Miller has been uploaded to the PM. The reason it's appearing on the Roci specifically is because it happens to have a trace of PM on it, possibly one of only places outside the ring. And Miller is there because (a) he best represents the ability of the PM to investigate and, maybe more importantly, (b) he is one of only two people that Holden knows that has become part of PM, the other being the spy from Season 1 but then Holden is hardly likely to trust him! And he needs Holden to take him somewhere, (aka the other side of the ring) for some reason. But that look Miller gives him when Holden tries to touch him - priceless! And the hat? If it's recreating Miller from his memories, then the hat is what Miller would remember himself as looking like, as noted by Holden who hasn't ever seen Miller in the hat and is therefore very confused by it's presence.

Regarding the ammo, I don't remember that being mentioned in the episode, when did they say it? And I'm guessing they don't know for sure who concocted that message, but lets face it, both the reporter and the cameraman are going to be in the brig next episode until they figure it out! Shame Naomi's not on board, she would've figured the technical details out much quicker! Also guessing that Anna is going to start wondering about Melba's emotional state right before things started blowing up and start digging, hope she's got god on her side as she'll need it if Melba goes all super powered on her!

another great episode

regarding proto-Miller, it seems like the protomolecule has as little clue about the humans as they do about the protomolecule. hence the "research" the kid was doing on Io and the fact it sent out "the investigator", as much to figure out what the humans' intent is as anything else. and the goo on the Rosi seems to allow a foothold there. it remains to be seen whether there is anything else to it.

and yeah, through those two outsiders in the brig. that drone pilot is, just, wrong. is he actually blind or what's his deal? his waving hand thing creeps me out.

i am also really liking the dynamics developing on the Behemoth as the OPA (supposedly) struggles with wanting to become one of the big boys/girls.

My understanding is yes, he is blind, and he has had sensors implanted in his fingers to allow him to see via a another method. You'll also notice he has some 'circuitry' running up his arms which presumably link back to his visual cortex. As ever it's better explained in the books (I think something to do with the original medical treatment to restore his eyesight leading to cancer?) but they haven't really explained it in the show, although I don't think it's a spoiler of any sort...

Can someone explain why they don't have ice haulers or other support vessels in the Ring fleet? Also what happened to the Razorback?

There are probably a whole number of support vessels, we just haven't seen them. The belter fleet in particular is made up of a whole rag tag flotilla. And the razorback, not sure, guessing Avasarala took it back to Earth?

I haven't seen the last few episodes, but a big jump in time took place and Avasarala had plenty of time to take it back to Earth. The Belt ought to be full of humongous vessels given that it is in the business of mineral extraction. Water would be the most important resource they need in large quantities. Mineral processing usually involves water too, unless that has changed. Hard to believe that the Mormon ship was the largest.

Hard to believe that the Mormon ship was the largest.

It was supposed to be based on the hundred-year-ship design, making it a generation ship or a seed vessel, hence the larger-than-normal size. I believe Mormon's would be perfect settlers. They are peaceful and resourceful enough to handle the business in foreign lands. It's the people who come later that causes the problems.

But, you're right, the Earth-Mars-OPA Ring fleet should have at least twice the number on support vessels zipping between and around the formations. There's hardly any of that stuff visible in the space-shots. Maybe the fleets are able to self-support themselves, like the Mormon's would have done in their ship.

My understanding is that most of the belter fleet responsible for water, mineral or other 'mining' activities are haulers, they are more like tugs than holding the extracted resource internally. If you take the Cant from the first episode, it's pulling ice behind it, so the ball of ice is huge, but the mass of the ship is relatively small. The Nauvoo / Behemoth by comparison was designed to be sent out amongst the stars and therefore needed to be self-sufficient, hence the size. As Fred Johnson says early in the first series (I think), it's supposed to be the biggest ship ever built. But, as reinforced (too many times for my liking in the last few episodes), it wasn't designed to be a warship, so high-gee manoeuvres, use of weapons, even what shielding they have, is not going to compare against the MCRN and UNN fleets.

As for why we haven't seen lots of support ships from the UNN / MCRN fleets? Budget? I would think that the warships would be pretty self-sustainable (like a submarine is), so they don't need a massive amount of support ships. Also possible that the support ships are lagging behind the main fleet (which is making a bee line for the ring) and will arrive at a later date...
