Hey..i try to do some research on that Topic. I wan't to write something in that direction but lacking of some Ideas/breakpoints.
So i look for Books, Games, Movies/TV Shows..

I wanted to do something like Prä Astronautic. Means - the World is pretty primitive. No advanced technologys but they where or get visited from another Dimension/Planet from a much more evolved Species. What are some cool Stuff you encountered?
I mean straightforward..a highly advanced Alienrace even would wipe out modern Humanity..so how can a World with Axe & Sword deal with this..
Mayxbe this Technology is also what they call Magic in the World, or Magic is more Psi-Stuff..and or its just a much better understanding of the Mind/Spirituality.

You should study history first.
While the SF/F part you can twist it as you like, the primitive/ancient society/culture needs to be believable.
Reading the history is a guarantee to get lots of ideas on influencing the timeline. There are also plenty of breakpoints, conflicts, heroes and villains in history.

One thing I will mention is, 'fools rush in where angels fear to tread.'

We often imagine less-advanced humans no matter the era, abruptly bowing down in awe of advanced technologies wielded by different cultures or races. History has proven that 'us savages,' instead, when we see something different/advanced become curious-- however, the moment it becomes a threat, or simply because it is so different, able to or not, we try to kill it. We don't say 'wait, let's consider our options here.'

There are also those among us who have established their authority and power... and they're not about to give that up 'just because.' They would rather sacrifice their people, often as they sit back, observe and consider.
