The book is an anthology of science fiction stories that were adapted into movies.

Enjoying Good Omens series 2. Some nice in-jokes in the books glimpsed. Episode 3 Archangel Gabriel drops a copy of Alekhine’s My Best Games of Chess, of which I own an identical copy. The only other place I have seen this is in the classic film A Matter of Life and Death, which I might have mentioned at the very beginning of this thread.

I racked (pun intended) my brain to try to identify any of these. I was finally able to track down the two dirty magazines in the upper right corner.

(I found a copy of the cover image, which isn't offensive, without the salacious words overlaying it.)

(I have cropped the cover to avoid the offensive part of the image and the salacious words below "antique." Moderators, delete if this is still not acceptable.)

I think this is the 'Life' cover, top left - it's August '81, which fits with the film release date.

I think the rest are too blurry to find, so here's an interesting one from the 1940's...

If we use the May 1981 date on these jazz mags, then this is the issue of High Times. Look s about right from what we can see on the rack.

Comics too use made up papers to help the story along: Jaques Tardi does it a lot in his Adele Blanc-Sec books
This page from his Adele et la Bete is probably the densest example I know:

My favourite though is from Lucky Luke - Calamity Jane. Where a town newspaper in the American west prints a headline in French (with spelling mistake gag) above a bunch of text in English pulled out of a tourist guide to the Mississippi Gulf Coast which includes the phrase "guano covered rocks".
