Source of methane pinpointed by Curiosity rover and Mars Express

Quick to state it by no means means there is life on Mars, the non life generating explanations leave open many questions. Non life generated methane can be produced by abiotic processes. Two of the most common processes are either existing methane deposits formed presumably from petroleum geology, which probably had life at one time producing it, or by serpentinization, which is serpentinized ultramafic rocks. This process can generate measurable heat and uses water. A heat source for microbes similar to the stuff that lives around hydrothermal vents in Earth's deep ocean floors. If there is enough water to carry out the process under the surface, there might be even more water than already suspected.

Explanation of the serpentinization process and how it links to early life formation
