Unknown title or author but i feel this story originates in the 1970s or 80s. English language. Many humans die in the quest to fly to the mountaintop because they try to bend the winds and local guides instead of trusting and "bending with the winds" Of the two featured humans, one crashes into the mountain and dies. The other succeeds and lives. The title may contain the words TO FLY (and the mountain's name). Reason for the ascent may be as a rite of passage or just because it's there? I'm sure i read it in a thick paperback anthology originally.

A description I found on another site:-

The Winds at Starmont is about two human sportsmen who visit an alien planet dominated by an umpteen-mile-tall volcano. The native inhabitants of the planet have wings.

The two men wear artificial wing suits, and with a native guide they attempt to fly to the top of Starmont, a task which is considered impossible to complete.
