(Found) Post Apocalypse

I am looking for a book that I read way back in the 90s although it could have being published in the 80s. I think the main character was called Melveg and he was searching for his son who is captured by some bandits. It was the middle book of a loose trilogy. The first book was set in our time and had the word Faraday?? In its title.

The cover of the book featured a blasted land with high cliffs.

Vague I know it if just popped into my head today and I have hankering to read it again.

Found it! It was a eureka moment at breakfast. The author's name just popped into my head Richard Ford.

Melvaig's Vision, The Children of Ashgaroth and The Quest for Faradawn.
