New The Stand mini series.

This should be a good series, but I really hope that they keep it to one series and don't try to expand on the story.. The cast looks pretty solid. Looking forward to reading more.

She's perfect!

I disagree. Not old enough, too fat, and...Whoopi Goldberg. Just NO. I know Ruby Dee isn't with us anymore, but there's got to be somebody out there more suitable for the role who can pull it off.

She's 63, and a fine actor. Um... perhaps she'll lose weight? :D

Actually, I don't believe anyone's appearance does any harm to any but a few stories, and The Stand is not one of them. Makeup will make Whoopie look older, and c'mon... what does her weight really have to do with the story?

Nothing, granted...but she's still completely wrong for the role. I wouldn't be able to unsee Whoopi Goldberg no matter how much makeup she's got on...or hear that dreadful grating voice of hers. Can she sing?

Film and TV adaptations don't need a replica of the characters described in books.

As a Dark Tower fan I wasn't happy with the idea of Idris Elba as Roland but it was enjoyable enough.

What does it matter if Mother Abigal is 40 younger and a few stone heavier.

Directors are known for taking artistic license with our beloved books, they changed the time period of IT.

First, I don't find her voice 'grating'. Second, Cicely Tyson, in the role of Miss Jane Pittman, looked quite convincing as a 90-plus year old woman. Tyson was only 50. Third, no where in The Stand did it say Mother Abigail was a good singer. ;)

I think Whoopi would make a good Mother Abigail, I really liked her in Next Generation.

Maybe you and Cathbad are right. I hope so. I certainly would like to be wrong, and have this be the success the former series should have been. I'm unfamiliar with the other actors named...thoughts?

I'm terrible with actors names, I can watch a whole series and not know the names of the actor.

Me too. I finally learned the Game of Thrones actors' names just because it was something I watched regularly. The only one I knew offhand was Sean Bean. Truth be told, I'm not a very close follower of Hollywood.

However, you mentioned above about how they changed the era It was set in. It got me thinking and wondering if that's going to be the case here. Have we heard if that's going to be the case with The Stand? Because if so, the manner in which society collapses is going to be entirely different. That was my favorite and most fascinating aspect of the novel, and it was reflected fairly enough in the first miniseries. Now we will have Twitter, FB, and other social media figuring into the way the info about the plague spreads, not to mention a somewhat, ah, different political climate.

Thoughts?

I hope they don't mess with the ( memory may be wonky with the name, its 20 years plus since I read it ) SARS virus, I liked how the epidemic spread and the way society collapsed.

The part about the rapid collapse of society was much better overall than the second half of the book. Add mobile phones and internet, and this would look very different. Perhaps some kind of large scale power loss would be needed if they are going to show clips from different places. Otherwise it becomes a very different story.

I agree...in fact, that was always the most fascinating aspect of the book IMO. And probably how I developed a taste for apocalyptic fiction.

You're right, though. The nature and speed of the collapse would be entirely different today. King would practically have to re-write the entire book!

:ROFLMAO:
