(Found) Searching for a Sci-Fi Book like everyone else

Hello, I'm hoping someone has some ideas!

I have very few details, I believe it started with a character that either woke up in a hospital or remembered being in a hospital as his memory was returning. The character I believe was regaining bits of memory as the story progressed. I think he had a bandage on of some type but he was in danger of being found and didn't realize it at least not right away.

I remember the characters either going through possibly a time jump and had been chased for a while.

There was something special about a car, can't remember what but it left an impression on me.

I read the book about 2004.

It was part of a collection of books, I don't think you needed to read them all or in any particular order to make sense of the story, the person that loaned it to me said this was a better book than some of the others.

Nine Princes in Amber, by Roger Zelazny? That is a pretty good description of how it begins. But they don't jump through time, they walk through dimensions, or take shortcuts by using tarot cards. I don't remember anything special about a car, though, so maybe not.

One of the Amber stories ?begins? with Our Hero and his buddy/brother riding down a road as OH reminisces to himself. The wagon travels through the woods then the car pulls up at a gas station (yes, the vehicle morphed as they traveled).

Thanks to you all for your help, I was able to download a sample of the book from Amazon and that was it. I can't wait to read it again. Can I or should I change the post title to solved?
