Science Fiction Series I can't recall

Some while ago, I read a science fiction series about a space war. I can't remember the series title or even individual book titles within the series. One of the characters was an Egyptian girl nick-named "Munchkin", and she had a child conceived in space who became a star-ship pilot. Munchkin was killed in an explosion. The main protagonist survived the final battle and married another character. Can anyone remember the author's name or the series title? It sucks getting old!
