What are the ten movies you are happiest to own (or, if you can't afford them or they are out of print, wish you owned) on DVD/Blu Ray? That is, I'm not asking for some kind of objective list, which films are classic and you think everyone should have in their collection, but rather which ones give you the most joy, you watch most often, you'd be saddest if you lost them, etc. If it's a box set, or a TV show, list it as one of the ten.

Here's my list, in no particular order:

All That Heaven Allows (Douglas Sirk, 1955)
Far From Heaven (Todd Haynes, 2002)
Twin Peaks / Twin Peaks: The Return (David Lynch at al., 1990-1991, 2017)
The Red Shoes (Powell & Pressburger, 1948)
The complete Marx Brothers (actually two different box sets plus a stray last film, but I'll list it as one item. It's my list, dammit!)
The River (Jean Renoir, 1950)
The Barefoot Contessa (Joseph L. Mankiewicz, 1954)
Days of Heaven (Terrence Malick, 1978)
Betty Blue (Jean-Jacques Beineix, 1986)
Playtime (Jacques Tati, 1967)

Honorable mentions: Kubrick, 2001; Scorsese, After Hours; Peckinpah, The Wild Bunch; Hathaway, True Grit; Stevens, Shane; etc etc.

In some particular order
  1. A Fistful of Dollars/For a Few Dollars More/The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1964/65/66)
  2. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
  3. Woodstock (1970)
  4. Get Carter (1971)
  5. Cabaret (1972)
  6. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
  7. Apocalypse Now (1979)
  8. Hair (1979)
  9. Time Bandits (1981)
  10. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001-2003)
These are the films/collections that immediately sprang to mind

On another occasion I might have included Monty Python's Holy Grail and Life Of Brian, the first three Star Wars, Jabberwocky, Marx Brothers, Laurel and Hardy, Spinal Tap, Monterey Pop...:)

Well, I own four of those... Or rather six, because one of them is the Fistful trilogy. Though I think I may like Once Upon a Time in the West even more.

A mate bought me The Rocky Horror Picture Show as it's his favourite film ever but it's too rapey for me.

Favourite films I own would be:
Funny Bones (1995)
To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar (1995)
The Words (film about a writer who gets his work stolen - hard to get on DVD so mine is an Italian import) (2012)
Spirited Away (I mean, all my Ghibli films really, but this in particular) (2001)
Ringers, Lord of the Fans (A LoTR docu that randomly both me and my partner own so we have two copies) (2005)
Any of my TMNT DVDs (1980s-now)
The entire X-Men animated series from the 90s, also really hard to get on DVD
Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus (I know, I know, but I watched it with my friend who's now sadly passed away so I have fond memories) (2009)
Fluke (1995)
C.H.U.M.S (Ant and Dec old school mickey take of Friends from SMTV) (2004)

Hmm, so 1995 was a good film year for me.

No particular order except for Shane at number 1.

1.Shane
2.Way Out West
3.Das Boot
4.2001: A Space Odyssey
5.The Usual Suspects
6.Memento
7.Untouchable
8.Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid
9.Bullitt
10.Touching The Void

1. Cinema Paradiso
2. Todd Browning's Dracula (with new score by Philip Glass)
3. The Longest Day
4. Angels With Dirty Faces
5. The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre
6. City Of Lost Children
7. Aliens
8. Delicatessen
9. Downfall
10. The Public Enemy

I rarely watch movies over again any more, since there is so much new video entertainment available. But I do have favourites, and would load up the DVD player if my streaming dried up.
Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Four Weddings and a Funeral
A Fish Called Wanda
Dirty Dancing
All That Jazz
Jurassic Park
Love Actually
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
The Breakfast Club
Sense and Sensibility (1995)

Pride and Prejudice (1995) BBC production—not a movie, but should get an honourable mention from me. I watched it multiple times, it is timeless.

The whole extended LotR set.
The Matrix
Saving Private Ryan
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Blade
The Exorcist
Fargo
Terminator 2
The Usual Suspects
Pulp Fiction

In no particular order:
Bladerunner
A Matter of Live and Death (1946) aka Stairway to Heaven
Alien
Once Upon A Time In The West
Das Boot
Forrest Gump
Jeremiah Johnson
Roman Holiday
Thirteen Days
The Shawshank Redemption
The Time Machine (1960)

Oops, that makes 11 movies. But I am not going to eliminate one of those.
And I go along with the honourable mentioning of Pride & Prejudice.

No particular order.

The Princess Bride
Lord of the Rings trilogy
Scavanger Hunt
Support Your Local Sheriff
Red
Pride and Prejudice (the new one)
The Incredibles
Robin Hood (the Disney version)
Muppet's Treasure Island
Stand and Deliver

Clue would be on that list except I've already lost it . It was VHS taped off the TV and has sadly met its end.

Very much of the moment / morphing into a list of boxsets:
  • The Eagle has Landed (recent transfers have decent sound and less grain)
  • Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (played loudly on sick days)
  • Ghostbusters (funniest commentary track ever... or do you have a better one?)
  • Fringe (inc. the 5th season, not so much the 4th... okay, so the scitech is BS but then I watch Trek & the MCU, so...)
  • Mr Robot (season one)
  • True Detective (season one)
  • Jessica Jones (season one)
  • Fargo TV series (any season)
  • Ronin (Bourne before Bourne with better car chases...)
  • steve jobs directed by Danny Boyle (Jobs as Prospero?)
