Triumphant is the third instalment in Campbell’s prequel series The Genesis Fleet and it continues following the evolution of the Alliance. The invasion of Kosatka has been prevented though there’s still a lot of mopping up to be done and Geary has returned to Glenlyon. To survive against the aggressors Kosatka and Glenlyon have sent diplomats to persuade the other fiercely independent worlds in the region that they must form an alliance, something they are very reluctant to do. Whilst back in Glenlyon another invasion force is approaching that greatly outnumbers their forces both in ships and soldiers.
This is another good piece of military science fiction and as usual Campbell competently moves the story along at a cracking pace and with plenty of action thrown in. The characters are generally believable if sometimes a little too perfect at what they do, but that is fairly common in this style of book.
Triumphant is an enjoyable fast read but I’m not sure if it’s the last book in this series. I suspect it may be as it ends with an epilogue set in the time of the Lost Fleet books with Geary and Desjani discussing the events after Desjani has found an unpublished account of them by one of the major players. That epilogue gave a feeling of finality to this volume but I’ve never actually seen anywhere specifying how many books there are or will be in this series so I can’t be sure on that.
4/5 stars
