I was reading 'The Oversight' trilogy by Charlie Fletcher and it reminded me of a short story I read in the '80s about a couple who were hinted by people travelling through mirrors.

It was in a collection of short stories and I think there may have been a werewolf on the cover.

At that time I would have been reading a lot of classic sf such as asimov, heinlein, Harrison, zelazny and farmer.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I don't know if it is related but I happen to have recently watched "The Outer Limits - Demon with a Glass Hand " (1964) in which the bad guys travel through a mirror. Internet Movie Database says the writer was Harlan Ellison. You can watch it here:

Could it be The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathon Hoag by Heinlein? A couple of other threads where it's mentioned (Found) Birds enter through mirrors and steal souls and the world was and art/experimental creation

That is it exactly. I checked wikipedia for the synopsis and recall the ending where they handcuff each other at night so they don't get separated. Now to get a copy off Ebay to have a nostalgic read.
Many thanks

Hoorah! That's only the third one I've got in the near-11 years I've been here!!

By coincidence, that's the one thing that remained in my memory of the story from reading it as a teenager, and if it hadn't been for others IDing it in other search requests in recent years I wouldn't have put two and two together this time for you.

Anyhow, you're obviously a SF buff, so now you've found us I hope you'll stick around and join in conversations.

This post recalled to my mind the "Mordant's Need" series by Steven R. Donaldson, world hopping through mirrors and other mirror related magic, if anyone's interested in continuing the theme.

Alice through the Looking Glass.

Although I prefer Mr Hoag.
