A flashback reveals the origins of Alpha and Beta; Alpha attempts to toughen up Lydia as they prepare to walk with the dead; the Whisperers create their herds.

It's kind of strange that the Dead in this series are far more scarier than in the Fear. Sure they showed them rounding up Alpha and Lydia in the beginning of the apocalypse. But for some reason Alpha seemed to know what to do, especially as she had covered herself with the zombie blood.

One could claim that she's a woman without a fear. Yet, for some reason that turned her to freak, and in same way, she tried to force her ideals to the girl. I admit that Lydia had no choice but to follow her mother into the darkness. But, the others, you'll start to think what made you to choose to wear skin of a dead man? The living are not meant to be among the dead. Not even if they are still walking. I think it's morally wrong even if the whole concept is cool.

Thing is the so-called sisters were doubting about the prospect of their lives, when Beta lead them to an exploration mission. It was as if they were doubting that there's glory on anything they do. Sephardic the dead is risky business, and from seeing the real dead Whisperers in the Fear makes me think that there's a lot of people in their camp who feels the same way.

For the people like Beta, doing the thing is just a normal day operation, as he has accepted teh way of life, and the possibility of where it ends. I personally think that he acted in a sh*tty way, when he ordered the grieving Whisper mum to her death.

It's strange to think that it was Alpha who saved her, as if she was still having feeling even though it was her who forced the mum to abandon her child. You could claim that the biology is strong, and I would agree, because of the two hundred thousand years that we have been wandering on this planet the family relationships has become part of us. Nobody, in their right mind doubts mothers love. It's only natural and there should be nothing wrong about it.

Yet, Beta thinks that all of them are trained commandos, sneakily slinking among the dead, never feeling anything. Alpha early on told him, "There are two kind of people in the world, ones that walk among them and others..." And Beta couldn't accepted it. Not straight away. So, the question becomes what made him to change?

One thing he was right about and that is mum brought danger to the group. She almost made them all lose their lives and if the horde would have been any bigger they could have been in a grave, grave danger. So, how do the Whisperers travel with their atomic bomb, ten thousand strong horde?

Does this many anyone of you to think Beta has some serious mental problems and the whole forced Whisperer concept might because he forced the situation? It is as if he's the angry father of whole family that is called the Whispers. If Daryl would know this, it would be easier to target Beta and make the group to dissolve in the aftermath.

This seriously freaked me out, not something that happens very often.

Will be interesting to see how the whisperers will react when they discover Lydia is still alive.

We've had some real bad villains in the past but there is something really terrifying about Alpha, I'm hoping there is some major confrontation between her and Carol, toss up who is the most psychotic.

Beta I don't get the same creepy vibe from as alpha. He's creepy but I think Alpha has nurtured his guilt and pain turning him into what he is now. Without her he would have remained a longer steering clear of others.

I haven't seen this yet, but a flashback episode? Seriously? They need to move on from the Whisperers as quickly as possible, not dwell on it even longer. Can you tell I'm not a fan yet? Should I watch this episode? Does it have any redeeming features?

Unquestionably freaky, but what peek into a cult of the dead is bright and full of sunshine?

I can’t imagine anything darker than a group of people who not only walk with the dead but seek to empty themselves of all living feelings. Alpha obviously doesn’t emotionally practice what she preaches.

I don’t know what Alpha aspires to be in the World of Walkers. She doesn’t seem have the grandiose goals of a Negan or Ginny. Is she really content to keep the pack intact and prevent territorial encroachment by other survivors?

Beta is the real freak here. He seems more like Alpha’s puppet master than her lieutenant. I suspect that his voice is electronically altered to give it that commanding gravitas.

Anyone else think that he could be a Wookiee?

You have stopped before. What keeps you going?

Yeah, she is totally effed. The apocalypse did her head in more than it did the same to Beta.

I think she has become institutionalised over the years and now she cannot find a way out. It's all about death and dead people. And that has been going over six years. All that time Beta guarding that she doesn't slip to wrong side and somehow have emotions. thing is, you cannot remove those emotions because it's all part of being human, or alive. We are not robots or the dead.

Anyone else think that he could be a Wookiee?

A sasquatch, not a wookie. LOL

Because they had moved on from part where they were stuck with the Neegan broken record, endlessly repeating, and because I also really did like FTWD (which at that time had a very different upbeat vibe to it) so I thought it was worth catching up with TWD again.

The Walking Dead pulled the mask back on Alpha and Beta in Sunday night's Episode 10x02. However, in doing so, the team behind the AMC zombie series elected to keep Beta's face and full pre-apocalyptic backstory a secret for the time being. As it turns out, this was a decision made by Beta actor Ryan Hurst with a key Star Wars character in mind, while it also fuels the mystery of Beta's past for fans of The Walking Dead. Furthermore, the episode which was split between the present timeline and a scenario set seven years in the past was not influenced by any of the time jumps as they relate to Rick's disappearance and Hurst opened up about all of it.

Following the episode, the first thing on fans' minds is why Beta hides his face and whether or not he is a famous musician. "They're are all good questions. Those are all good questions," Hurst tells Insider. "I can't give you the answer. All that I noticed is I'm doing my job if you're asking those questions. I remember in season nine Angela was like, 'We would like to show your face.' And I was like, 'Are you kidding?' I was like, 'No.'"

For Hurst, he thought of an iconic villain's fate following the reveal of his face when it came time to take the mask off. "After you see under Darth Vader's mask, you don't need to see him much more after that," Hurst said. "I was like, 'Let's just pose, let's just let the audience keep wondering up until the very last minute.' There are answers to all of these questions about why he wears it and what's underneath there. Is he protecting himself? Is he protecting the people that are still alive out there? How does that make any sense? These are all the questions that I wanted the audience to be asking."

Please post predictions of when the Whisperers storyline will be completed. I do generally like backstory episodes, though usually for long term characters.
I will go with season 10 episode 16. Though I think by episode 8 would be better.

Episode 8 will see the end for the Whisperer storyline and beginning for the helicopter people, or whatever else there is reserved for the next.

I'm so tired of these big bad story arcs. Alpha is basically Negan 2.0, who was already the Governor 2.0. It's the same story beats over and over. You'd think there are other kinds of stories to tell in the world TWD has created. I want to see more stories of reconstruction, the rebuilding of human society, industry... Maybe exploration (now that they have boats, how about taking some of the characters to the Caribbean, or maybe even Europe?) It's like they've created a fascinating story world, and run out of imagination as to what stories to tell in it. Or maybe they think that such big-bad conflict is the only kind of storyline fans are interested in.

The only thing is with reconstruction you may get more dull periods like some of the Alexandria farming situation. I do agree that exploring around is a lot more fun. Maybe the helicopter people will be linked to society's reconstruciton.

See, I didn't find the Alexandria farming situation dull. But it certainly can be done in a more dramatically interesting way without having every story be white hats versus black hats. FTWD was trying to do that before they lost their way and brought in Virginia, or whatever her name is (the Governor 4.0).

I agree. They need to do exploration as that has been on hold since they arrived at Alexandria. Obviously it's going to be on hold, since they are going to clash with the dead people and their shepherds. Most likely they are going to cause some sort of siege situation.

Thing is, they've done exploration in the Fear, and they have shown even other countries, which was exciting because it wasn't just on American turf. To me, they'll have probably two to three seasons of storylines, and then it's finished. People will remember it as an icon of era that made zombies more popular than Romero ever could.

Before they killed off Carl, I was hoping at some point they'd have a jump forward of maybe 15 years, show the rebuilt community and maybe send some of them, with Carl in the lead, exploring either the northern/western US and Canada, or Europe. Maybe retrace the journey of the Vikings, in reverse.

I think there's that sort of plan with the third series, as it's YA coming to age with the young people, who haven't experienced the old world in full.

I do wonder why they didn't choose to set the new series on another continent. Maybe not enough interest from North America viewers? Though if they have a group travel to another continent that will do. Probably they are just as messed up.

Flashbacks...if I want them I drop some acid. I will pick up this episodes story on one of the reviews.
