Can anyone recommend independent copy editors who are high quality and affordable? (as in $1.5k or less for a ~150,000 word novel that I intend to self-publish). The genre is LitRPG Lite (so a mix of SciFi and fantasy elements).

I recently paid a gentleman with a legit-looking company and website who was recommended by Reddit around $800.00 and he did nothing but rushed, low-quality proof-reading. Suffice it to say, I am disappointed.

Sorry if I have underestimated you knowledge of editing of manuscripts.
It is one of the problems of self publishing , many writers completely underestimate the skills that publishers bring to the the process. Your manuscript is long and would take many hours of work for an editor to work through it . There is not a single editing process . After you have completed your last draft .
Opinions very , but we are talking of 5 or more levels of editing .The first few, you need some readers to give you some critiques. When the story is correct, structure and the like . The next step is copy editing . This is to check for grammar and other writing errors . You can do this yourself using a checklists. There are lots of them out there . One I like is by The Monash University. It is only after you reach this point you should be considering using a professional Proof Editor .

Finch has a point. What did you expect from a copy editor? Of course you want high quality work but their role is to correct grammar and spelling and ensure continuity in the manuscript.

If you want feedback on whether your novel is working, flow and story you need a developmental editor. @TeresaEdgerton is well worth an approach, and @Boneman, too.
