He’s hugely underrated. Grub St is essential reading.

I was always put off by Paul Theroux. He took New Grub Street to read on the Patagonian Express and found that he didn't enjoy it and cast it aside midway through. I forget exactly how he described it, but my impression was that he found it rather pedestrian and failed to reach the literary heights of contemporaneous classics.
