I'm writing a book and going for a different genre here. It includes a lot of world building and I'm stuck on one spot. It's a fantasy setting with two main places: a large land mass and one island. The part I'm struggling with is the island. Does anyone know where I can get some resources or have any tips on writing the island? I'm mostly looking for the names of different parts of the island. Thanks in advance!

First of all, hello and welcome to the Chrons!

This is an interesting question, but I'll move the thread over to our Writing Discussion forum, where this will get more attention.

Anyhow, the first thing I think we need to know is how big is the island? I live in England, which is part of a larger island, which itself is part of the island group known as the British Isles, but my experience is going to be different from someone living on the Isle of Wight and very different from someone on Brownsea Island, both of which are just off the south coast from me. And don't forget Australia is also an island! Size matters!!

When you're looking for names, are you wanting terms such as spit and ness, or given names such as eg Choughs Rock?

Do you mean features like this?:

Or what exactly? It' might help if your described your island a little and mention what aspects you're trying to learn names for.

Terms are more what I'm looking for. I hadn't thought about providing all that other information. Like I said, building a whole world is a first for me. I've built kingdoms but not the entire world. Thanks for being patient! The island is called Talameh and is about 4,000 square miles, like the big island of Hawaii.
Some of the things I'm confused about are why different shores are called things like wayward or layward.

Any chance of your re-posting or re-linking there, @-K2-? I can't see anything!

Sounds exciting! I've never built anything approaching an entire world -- good luck with it!

I've not come across wayward and layward. Would that be a US version of windward and leeward perhaps? Those refer to the way the wind blows -- the windward side gets the wind, the leeward side is protected.

Regarding terms in general, would this be of help? Glossary of Geography Terms and Definitions

This is great! And it probably is the US version. Thanks again!!
