Originally read N.K. Jemisin’s Stone Sky out of order. Local library doesn’t help with series of books.

Gratefully re-reading it, but I’m in some sort of a campus of apparently non-human children with skills, and I’m lost, even having read the book before, as to what their role is based on.

Possibly they are orogenes in some past condition of their world. Don’t know. Hoping for some suggestions without 2a kind respondent bothering to re-write the whole novel.

Thanks.

Huh? Have you read The Broken Earth, the first book in the series? Stone Sky is the final book. There's literally no point in reading it if you haven't read the first two.

Thanks, I have. But as I said I read Stone Sky before I realized it was the third of a series and now, trying to read-read it, am making better sense of it. But these little people-like children have me disoriented. They do not appear in the other two books AFAIKR.

Been a while since I read it but I think the "little people-like children" only appear in the last book and their part of the story happened way back in time so are being told in flashbacks.

They do appear in the other books but in a different form, they are the same beings that Essun would know as 'Stone Eaters', although they won't take on that form until the end of the flashbacks in "The Stone Sky". I think if you read through the book you should get a lot more explanation of their background.
