I read this book a few years back (mid 2010's), but I can't remember much about it. Here's what I do remember:
It was a Young Adult Sci-Fi novel
The main characters were a boy and a girl, who I think were seniors in high school.
Their school got flooded in the beginning of the story.
The girl was a genius, and created a device to send messages back in time through astronomical phenomena. She created this device based on her own observation of these astronomical phenomena, through which her future self encoded the instructions to make the device.
The antagonists (I think) were some race of monsters (I can't remember exactly what they were). They were impervious to almost all forms of attacks, and just stuck themselves back together when they were attacked. I think they may have been a mist or a gel. Their only weakness was water.
The book had an unhappy, sort of hopeful ending: the monsters overtook the surrounding area, the main characters hid out in a submarine and the girl ended the book by suggesting they send messages back in time with the device to solve the problem.
