Sometime between 2nd and 5th grade I read a book in school, that was either "Fantasy" or "Science Fiction". I think I read it twice, but as I'm now 53, that was a few DECADES ago.
I'm guessing between 1972 and 1977 at the latest.
A young boy was out one night on the 4th of July. I think? At least out at night. He went running through a field, fell into what he thought was a hole in the ground, and disappeared. His parent's heard him yell, looked all over, but couldn't find him.
He came out in a slightly different world, like a "Parallel Dimension" type thing, was taken in by a local family, and eventually got back "Home", by falling into another hole in a field. Well, I Think that's how he got back home. He was only gone a few months though, so it wasn't one of those "Disappears as boy, returns as a grown man" sort of things. Or like Narnia, where he goes, grows to manhood, then returns as a boy. I Think he also had a dog, which may or may not have been transported with him.
The people that took him in were Human also. While everything seemed "similar", it was Obvious to the kid and the people that took him in that their Worlds were Similar, but he was NOT just from a Different Part of the SAME World.
I'm Pretty Sure it was in paperback, NOT part of an Anthology or Short Story Collection. It was in English, but I've NO idea what might have been on the cover, regarding cover art. Not the faintest clue who the author was.
